She began acting in television in the mid 1990s, and is currently in numerous films including The Woods, Blue Car Murder by Numbers Blood and Chocolate and The Anna Nicole Story. Bruckner made her debut at the age of 11. Her appearances were on some television pilots and the daytime soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful, in 1999. When she was 15 years old, Bruckner received her first lead part in the independent film Blue Car (2002) in which she played a high school student in an affair with her teacher, played by David Strathairn. Film critic Roger Ebert wrote that Bruckner negotiates this difficult story with complete conviction. Bruckner has been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for "Best female leading actress" in this part. She was brought up with two brothers and one sister. Her initial language was Hungarian which she frequently learned the language in order to be in the loop. Bruckner is a Hollywood Californian born daughter of an Hungarian father and a Russian mother. Her paternal grandparents were German. Her parents met in Hungary and immigrated in the U.S. in 1984 through the refugee camp located in Italy. There are three of her siblings including two sisters and one brother.
